AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 1, 2011) - The Center for Nonprofit Excellence and Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs will present a law seminar for nonprofit organizations on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Holiday Inn Rockside Road, 6001 Rockside Road, Independence. The seminar is for nonprofit CEOs and CFOs.
Four Buckingham partners - all members of the firm's Nonprofit Practice Group - will present the latest updates in the areas of governance, taxation, compliance and fundraising.
Gerald Chattman, chair of the Nonprofit Practice Group, will provide an "Employment Law Update."
Cathy Godshall will present "Understanding Nonprofit Mergers," covering the legal, operational and tax issues nonprofits should consider before entering into a merger transaction with another nonprofit.
James Simon's presentation is "Benefits and Drawbacks to Being a Fiscal Agent or Using a Fiscal Sponsor." He will talk about collaborating with other nonprofits and structuring arrangements with fiscal agents who enable providers without 501(c)(3) status to obtain funding from sources that will only fund tax exempt organizations.
Patrick Weschler will speak on the benefits and perils of social networking and how the courts are defining the rights of users and businesses.
In addition to the legal presentations, the Center for Nonprofit Excellence's Executive Director, Theresa Proenza, will present "Succession and Transition Planning Strategies for Board Members and Staff."
This is the sixth nonprofit law seminar on which Buckingham and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence have collaborated. The cost to attend the seminar is $35. All proceeds benefit the Center for Nonprofit Excellence.
Pre-registration is recommended by Sept. 27. To register, contact Marie Erb at the Center for Nonprofit Excellence at 330-762-9670, ext. 2, or register online at www.cfnpe.org.
